Garments of the high priest (cohen hagadol) - the ephod, robe, tunic, turban, and sash. There were other important items, too, like linen boxers, a plate/headplate/ornament for the headdress/turban engraved with "holy to (the LORD)", shoulder-mounted stones with the tribal names, and one other thing...
ReplyDeleteI always envisioned this thing on the front of the high priest's "ritual vest"/ephod as a breastplate - some large thing covering most of his torso. Upon closer reading, it seems to be a 9in x 9in *pouch*, decorated with 4 rows of precious stones (each corresponding to a tribe). Inside the pouch the high priest carried the Urim ("lights") and Thummin ("perfections"), which were two other stones...
Delete...depending on the Bible translation we read, Ex.28:30, the high priest carries the "judgement of the people of Israel" or perhaps the "means for making judgements" near his heart. There's no clear answer for what these two stones were, what exactly they did, or how it worked....but when we read about Israel's leadership *casting lots*, it's a reasonable guess that the Urim and Thummin were being used to determine what the LORD's will was for that situation.
