Job 40 - 42

Job 40
[the LORD continues]
"...do you still want to challenge me?"
"I'm ashamed of myself.  I've got nothing more to say."
"Oh no, we're not done yet"
The LORD sets the terms: if Job can prove his divine glory and might, He will concede that Job was right and he was in the wrong.

Job 41
...if you don't know, and can't have dominion over my creatures, are you able to stand up to me?
"Who has given me anything and made me pay it back?  Everything belongs to me under all of heaven."

Job 42
Job responds to the LORD:
  • He acknowledges the Most High
  • He acknowledges that he put the Almighty in a false light
  • He wants to listen and obey, to get back in line and follow the LORD
After setting Job straight, the LORD lines out the three friends, resolving any perception of who was right and who was wrong: "...you have not spoken rightly about me..."
...He instructs the friends to come before Him in worship, and to have Job pray for them

After everyone obeys the LORD's instructions, all is restored.  Everything that Job lost - including his family and standing in the community - is restored, and increases.

  1. Thank you Jeffrey for posting the reading schedule and all the fantastic summaries!

This is just a thought. What if after everyone was set straight Job died? Would that change anything? Would it reflect any differently the character of the Heavenly Father?

  2. The Jewish community reads Psalms then Proverbs and finally Job. This order emphasizes the beginning of wisdom is the fear of יְהוָ֗ה (Yahovah). When we read Job in this light can we see a foundational difference between Job and his friends?
